INDIA CELEBRATES ITS 73rd INDEPENDENCE DAY .

VEENA RAIKHY

Independence day on August 15 marks the end of British regime in 1947 and the establishment of an independent Bharat ( India).

For India, 15 August is the day of rebirth. In simple words it was a new start as the British rulers handed the country back to the Indian leaders, thus ending a remarkable struggle that lasted almost two centuries. This day is significant in the history of India as being an end of the British Colonial rule in India. British rule in India began in 1757 following the victory of Battle of Plassey.

Ironically our independence coincided with the partition of India in which the British India was divided along religious lines into India and Pakistan.

In India, 15 August is marked with flag hoisting ceremonies and singing of patriotic songs. Various cultural events are organized through out the country.
